Looks like the Force is Strong in Ultrasounds - Will Luke Skywalker's bionic hand soon be possible?

in #science7 years ago

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have created an ultrasonic sensor that allows people with amputated hands to control each finger of the prosthesis individually. It manages to provide very fine hand gestures that are not possible with the devices that are currently available.

Gil Weinberg, the professor who directs the project said about it.

“Our prosthetic arm is powered by ultrasound signals ... By using this new technology, the arm can detect which fingers an amputee wants to move, even if they don’t have fingers.”

This is a video by Jason Barnes, musician and test subject for this "Skywalker" hand while playing the piano.

And it's not the first time that Gil Weinberg and Jason Barnes collaborate, in 2014 Gil made it possible for Jason to play the drums again.

It's an incredible breakthrough that is going to allow many amputees to somehow recover those things that they had to leave behind when they lost a member like Jason who could not play music.

Definitely the Force is Strong in Ultrasounds.
