The Sea of Serenity

Mare Serenitatis is a lunar sea located east of the Mare Imbrium and south of the Mare Frigoris, on the visible face of the Moon. Being a lunar sea it is an extensive, dark and basaltic plain that was filled with lava of volcanic eruptions after the impact of a meteorite during the process of formation of the Moon. The first astronomers called "seas" to this type of plains when confusing them visually with authentic terrestrial seas.
In the eastern part of the Mare, NASA's Apollo 17 spacecraft was landed on December 11, 1972, in the vicinity of the Taurus Mountains. It was the sixth and final successful moon landing mission of the Apollo program, taking as crew the astronauts Eugene A. Cernan and Harrison H. Schmitt, the two managed to remain almost 75 hours on the lunar surface and became the eleventh and twelfth person to step on the Moon. Eugene A. Cernan was the last human being to leave the surface of the Moon and his last words in doing so, not so famous as those of his companion Neil Armstrong, were: "Today's American challenge has forged man's destiny morning".
