Procyon is the brightest star in the constellation Can Minor with apparent magnitude +0.50 and the eighth brightest star in the night sky. It forms one of the vertices of the «Winter Triangle». It is a binary star; The main star (Procyon A) has a weak white companion dwarf (Procyon B).

Procyon A is a white-yellow subgiant star about 7 times brighter than the Sun, of spectral type F and has just fused the hydrogen of its nucleus in helium, and has begun to expand. It is believed that Procyon A will swell more than 100 times its current diameter and appear red or orange due to the consequent cooling of its surface. This will probably happen from 10 to 100 million years in the future. It is thought that the Sun will go through the same process after leaving the main sequence.
