The skull of a hominid reopens the debate on evolution

in #science7 years ago

The analysis of the skull of a former human ancestor from 1.8 million years ago found in Dmanisi, Georgia, indicates that the first members of our genus Homo, actually belonged to the same species and differentiated between them.
This skull, called Skull 5, recombines a small cranial box with a long box and large teeth. It was found next to the remains of four human ancestors, a set of fossils of animals and stone tools, all of them linked to the same location and period of time.

The authors of the work explained that the differences between Dmanisi fossils are not more prominent than those between five modern humans or five chimpanzees."The skull box and skull face 5 found as separate fossils in different parts of Africa could have been attributed to different species," said another author. This is because Skull 5 has key features, such as the small cranial box and the large face, which had not been observed together in an early Homo fossil until now.

The fossils associated with the skull 5 in Dmanisi can be compared to the fossils of Homo, including those found in Africa, which date back about 2.4 million years ago, as well as others discovered in Asia and Europe, which are between 1.8 and 1.2 million years.

The hominid fossils of Dmanisi represent human ancestors of the early Pleistocene, shortly after the first Homo diverged from Australopithecus and dispersed from Africa. The jaw associated with Skull 5 was found five years before finding the skull, but when the two parts come together, they form the massively constructed skull found at the Dmanisi site, whereby scientists suggest that the The individual to whom the Skull belonged was a man.
The skull box of Skull 5 has about 546 cubic centimeters, however, suggests that this 'Homo' had a small brain despite its modern proportions of human-like limbs and body size.

Skull 5 indicates that it is a single Homo species, which in front of a variety of ecosystems, arose in the African continent and, consequently, the classification system for these first human ancestors can not be the same
