Basic Polymer for Blue Light Transmision

in #science7 years ago

Hello dear steemian, hopefully still health for reading my post in steemit. Today i like to share you something about polycarbonate or polymer thermoplastic.

In the era of technology, the more day the more increasing of electronic devices, such as the presence of smartphones, laptops with HD screens, QHD, etc. Almost all workers use a laptop or pc to complete their task. Sometimes they have to look at the screen for about 5 to 6 hours in a day, even smartphone users though. They already know that electromagnetic wave radiation was present in electronic devices, But they ignored it. Have you heard about anti-radiation? I will explain you a bit about blue ray radiation.

Emission of Blue Light

The blue light is a beam that emits electromagnetic waves of about 450-495 nm, these rays have high energy, the blue light exposure comes from smartphones, computers and televisions. it transmission from electronic devices can interfere the health, especially for eye health. from some sources I've read that blue rays can make eyes tired even i felt it myself. Sometimes we do not realize why we can get tired, in fact, we just sit and type in front of computer/pc.

Scientists believe that was caused by photosensitive sensitive ganglion, sensitive retina cells that suppress melatonin production or stimulate the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus.

A mount of studies said the wavelength between 400-480 nm can cause mitochondrial dysfunction, the absorption of blue light, high energy and shortwave may aggravate the condition of retinal cells. So we should protect our eyes from the blue light. Excep blue light, there are other rays that can damage the eye health, such as UV-A with the wavelength about 315-380 nm and UV-B with 280-315 nm wavelength, but UV light only reaches the lens of the eye, while blue light can to penetrates into the retina. Is there any chemicals to solve this problem? Of course, yes !!

Light Transmission of Polycarbonate

To prevent eye damage from the blue light (rays) we should protect our eyes with glasses lenses made from certain chemicals, such as polycarbonate lenses composed of polymer thermoplastic, polycarbonate lenses with polymer structure can withstand electromagnetic waves of blue light or Ultraviolet. The basic material of polycarbonate in the metal form of lens coatings can prevent radiation. When you are faced with a monitor or a smartphone screen, the emission of blue light or ultraviolet waves direct to the eye, so the polycarbonate lens can prevent the blue rays, there are several types of spectacles lenses, such as Cr-39, Polycarbonate and Aspheric, However,  the lenses used to prevent the radiation beam is polycarbonate material. Because it is more effective.

Polymer thermoplastic of polycarbonate can be formed by heating, this polymer was heat resistant below 150oC and will melt at a temperature above of 300oC. The main ingredient of polycarbonate is bisphenol. it has a long chain with  [-O- (C = O) -O-] group, and it also used as a bulletproof glass material. The polycarbonate highly effective of light transmission so that it used in the optical industry. Chemically, the synthetic of polycarbonate can be manufactured with NaOH, The reaction can be formulated as follow :

(CH3)2-C-(C6H6)2-(OH)3 + 2 NaOH -> (CH3)2-C-(C6H6)2-O2- + 2 Na+ + 2 H2O

Then the oxygen in the bisphenol group reacted with carbonyl chloride (COCl2) then forming Polycarbonate

(CH3)2-C-(C6H6)2-O2- + Cl-(C=O)-Cl -> (CH3)2-C-(C6H6)6-(O-(C=O)-Cl)(O-) + Cl-

Clhoroformate was formed and bind to bisphenol, then form long chain of polycarbonate [(CH3)2-C-(C6H6)2-(O-(C=O)-Cl)(O-)].

The hard coating of polycarbonate lens just to protect the lens from being scratched, while the hard coating of other lens aims to transmit the light.

Conclusion

Initially,  I don't understand why I often feel tired, my activities just sitting in front of computer screen sometimes also use smartphone, after I browsing on google I read that blue rays can make tired on the eyes.  so I look for anti-fatigue glasses, many sources said the polycarbonate is more effective for light transmission.
