This very adorable artwork is made by artist Andrea Agerstmann from the website www.deviantart.com. I chose this picture because I know it is most expressive. Polar bears and heat do not go well together, nor do the ice caps need any more heating than it already gets today.

FACTS ABOUT POLAR BEARS

❄️ We can find polar bears in the Arctic.

❄️ The scientific name of polar bears given by Constantine John Phipps was ursus maritimus which is Latin for maritime bear

❄️ Polar bears are considered marine animals since they live most of their lives on the sea ice of the Atlantic ocean.

❄️ Polar bears have black skin

❄️ Their fur seemingly white, is actually transparent hollow tubes filled with air. This helps them keep warmer and water resistant.

❄️ They clean themselves by rolling on snow.

❄️ They are around 6-9 feet in length. 800 - 1,300 pounds (600+kg).

❄️ They are the largest land dwelling carnivores

❄️ They are insulated by the 10cm layer of fat under their fur.

❄️ Their sense of smell is so strong they can smell a seal 20 miles away.

❄️ Polar bears use ice as a platform to hunt seals

❄️ Their diet consists mainly of seals

❄️ Polar bears hunt and eat every four to five days. Their fat serves to keep them warm and is a nutritional reserve when food cannot be found.

❄️ Polar bears swim 60kilometers (100 miles) without rest in searching for food.

Not so fun facts about them

⚠️ Polar bears are listed to be vulnerable. Although their population is steady and now increasing they are still in a lot of risk.

⚠️ Due to ice melting/ climate change they swim for even longer

⚠️ WITH MORE HEAT from global warming the ice melts faster polar bears find it difficult to hunt seals. Because of this, these bears don't eat as much as they should. As a result they become thinner, have less insulation, less energy and if this continues their population will decrease.

  • Some of them starve to death
  • Some die of exhaustion with no ice to rest on
  • With no ice, less time to hunt or no hunting at all then no food.
  • They might not be able to build up fat to survive for the rest of the year.
  • They perish

WHAT AFFECTS THESE SEA BEARS MOST?

👉 Climate change

Please watch the video on climate change and polar bears.

Some people deny the existence of climate change just because they don't feel the heat or they think it is just exaggeration. If we don't take care and act then the results will be more devastating and irreversible.

👉Oil and gas development
This affects their habitat in numerous ways.

  • OIL SPILLS affect Iceland's where the bears and their prey dwell. Their fur is soiled resulting with less insulation causing HYPOTHERMIA
  • OIL INGESTION causes fatal KIDNEY FAILURE to polar bears who lick their fur after being exposed to oil spills.
  • DEN DISTURBANCES by oil exploration activities by man affect pregnant polar bears/mother polar bears with their young in dens where they stay. This causes them to abandon the den or abandon their young.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS? CAN WE HELP POLAR BEARS?

The answer is YES WE CAN!

My favorite polar bear video, watch and smile at this little baby 🐻
🙏 Let us reduce climate change because we can. Our environment is highly affected by:
  • Emission of polluting gases from burning fossil fuels.
  • Fossil fuels are burned when we use electricity or drive cars

🙏 We can do the following things to help out to prevent further damage to mother Earth
Let's work together to reduce global warming

❄️ (1) Use our cars less If you can walk, ride a bike or use public transport, then do it whenever possible.

❄️ (2) Use energy efficient light bulbs Go to your household stores and ask for appliances that use less energy like LED lights instead of regular light bulbs etc. Also spread the word about it!

❄️ (3) Conserve: Turn of electrical gadgets/appliances when not in use This goes for water as well. When not in use, switch it off, the few minutes when you're not using the electric fan or lights/lamp in the room saves energy, it might not amount to much but if we all save it, it saves so much energy

❄️ (4) Reduce, reuse and recycle this might sound cliche already but does anyone do it? You can:

  • Avoid products with so much packaging
  • Segregate your trash plastic, cans, paper can still be recycled. And separate the biodegradable trash so it's easily disposed of.
  • Bring paper bags instead of plastic bags from shops and malls.
  • Reuse your plastic bags, bring it with you to the wet market, small shops and whenever it might be needed. This avoids the need to use new plastic bags.
  • Did you know disposable diapers take 100-200 years to disintegrate?
👉 You can use cloth diapers which are safer and reusable it might not be the easiest method but it helps the environment and your future of your kids.

❄️ (5) Proper waste disposal helps BIG TIME! Please never ever throw garbage just anywhere and especially not in bodies of water. Not in the ocean, lakes, rivers etc. Save the fish and marine animals from death. You eat those fish as well by the way. You're eating what you're throwing too. So, beware.

All these actions will help reduce the amount of pollution we create. And don't forget, when you get older you will have the opportunity to vote for politicians that support taking action to reduce global warming. - Richard Pearson

It will take a long time for all the ice in the world to melt but we don't have to wait for that.

I watched a short clip of what if all
the ice melted what would happen to us?

See what they have to say:
WHAT IF ALL THE ICE MELTS?How do we adopt to a world without ice?

These photos were taken by Kerstin Langenberger after people said the skinny bear was an isolated case. It wasn't.

These are pictures of thin polar bears in northern Svalbard, summer of 2016.

That, I believe, is the main reason why I saw thin bears on a regular basis, and even came across two dead ones. So I’ve made this collage of hungry bears: in their prime age, seemingly healthy – but just far too thin.

I am convinced that climate change has a lot to do with their condition, and that it is more urgent than ever to fight global warming – on a national and international level as well as at home in our every day life!… - Kerstin Langenberger

🍃🌼Let us reflect on that a bit more🌼🍃

Polar Bear Photography and Art Feature

📸 With all that being said, here are some beautiful snaps and art I have come across with in the Art Website I am in (www.deviantart.com).

These magnificent beasts survive the harsh cold environment of the Arctic.

They swim and smell powerfully.
They are unique from their black and brown cousins.

Let's save their natural habitat please.

Thank you for doing your small part to spread awareness about the plight of the polar bears.

Thank you for your appreciaion!
We all need to do our part.
Less energy consumption and conserving it.
Less plastics.
Stay clean.

This I such an important topic and a very well-written post! I learned some new facts about polar bears, too. Thanks :)

Hi thank you so much. My blog is supposed to be an art blog but I must post about climate change and environmental issues.
Have to save wildlife!!!!!!!!

💖🙏🌼🍃 I am so happy you learned something and thanks for your appreciation and support.
You're very kind!

poor polar bears! they are one of the most affected creature due to global warming. we really need to act quick to save their population.

Yes true! Thanks.
I'm thinking of organizing coastal clean ups and other activities too.

Great post. I think you can register this post with @dobartim Steemit Ultimate Challenge Week #6. Go go go.

U sure??? Why how?

Nice article. Really educating.

Thank you so much!!!!
