Introduction

In principle, communication serves to; inform, educate, entertain and to influence. One of the communication media products developed to assist in the functioning of modern communication is Informatics and Multimedia Communication. In this age, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has turned the world into the size of a small village and we can all communicate and connect very easily just by utilizing this existing informatics and multimedia communication facilities.

The development of Information and Multimedia Communication is currently growing rapidly and its has had a significant impact in the economic, social, cultural and political life order, even touching the religious lines. This impact has both positive and negative influences. On one hand, the presence of Communication of Information and Multimedia provides a convenience for human activities, but on the other hand, it can have dangerous outcomes. 

For instance: the implications of the current ICT has promoted the idea that mass communication tools are effectively performing their functions. But behind the scenes, it has also often incurred a violation of the values of social norms and religions.  

An example of such a violation is the cultural challenge within our younger generations where individuals are using informatics and multimedia communication content that has been manipulated, making it unsuitable for consumption, such as pornographic content. Based on this information, researches were interested to further study how Communication Informatics and Multimedia are viewed from normative, historical and realistic aspects in this contemporary era.

Defining and Discussing Information and Multimedia Communcations

There is currently more than one set definition for the term Informatics and Multimedia Communications. But to give you more information behind the term I will use my own means to describe it below.  

There have been many definitions of the term “communication” that have been defined by experts in accordance with the background of the science it possesses. Among them, the definition of communication according to Lasswell is:  

an act of communication by defining who said it, what was said, in what channel it was said, to whom it was said, and with what effect it was said. 

While Wikipedia defines communication as the act of informing by source (communicator) through symbols and semiotic rules to form an understanding and influence each other.[source] 

In the diagram below you will see that communication is never separated from sending messages from one person to another or group. This means that communication refers to a medium, a channel, a communicator, a communicant, noise and feedback, all associated with the process of sending messages.

Based on the understanding above, it can be concluded that communication is the process of interaction between the sender of the message (communicator) and the communicant (receiver), to achieve mutual understanding. Communication messages are delivered using certain media. In this case, Informatics and Multimedia communication are one of the media used to convey communication messages in today’s contemporary era.   

In the academic world, Informatics is a science that studies transferring of data and information on computing-based machines. Informatics covers several fields, including: information systems, computer science, information science, computer engineering and information applications in the management of information systems. Meanwhile, in a Wikipedia article, it is explained that multimedia is the content that uses a combination of various forms of content such as text, audio, images, animation, video and interactive content.[source]

So, if we put together three words for instance, they then become the structure of Informatics and Multimedia Communication. In this case, Informatics and Multimedia Communication is one of the mediums to transform certain data formed in a combination of picture, text, sound, animation and video, into another form, using computers or other electronic devices. The aim is to send the information to recipients (communicants) to gain mutual understanding and influence of words written etc.

Informatics and Multimedia Communication based on ICT is used globally, especially on the Internet. It provides a number of collections of up-to-date information with various variations that can be accessed quickly, easily and inexpensively from thousands of interconnected global networks.

The Influence This Type Of Communication Can Have on Cultures and Religions

According to my lecturer, Dr. Ahmad Sabban Rajaguguk M.A, lecturer of the Communication of IAIN Lhokseumawe, for the Muslim community, utilization of the Internet also received criticism and challenges because of the danger that can damage the Muslim generation. One of the reasons is the easy methods there are to inserting pornography into learning materials, which of course is against Islamic values. 

Thus, using ICT-based technologies means that opportunities are created for users to be exposed to committing the act of adultery, which is banned in Islam. When one becomes addicted to surfing the Internet, it is feared that the values of Islamic education (which is the objective to be achieved), are in fact compromised and a person is then actually turned away from Islamic education and values.

Based on the description above, it can be concluded that Informatics and Multimedia Communications, especially internet-based online media, has positive and negative impacts. Basically, the internet is noble because it includes the product of human reason - negative or positive depends on the user.
