Do we have any proof that our universe cannot be a simulation?

in #science7 years ago

The question is, “Do we have any proof that our universe cannot be a simulation?”

Great Question. We have been blindly suggesting that we live in a simulation. But I suggest that there is a way of figuring this out.

While we don’t have any physical proof yet, I believe there is physical proof out there somewhere. I have started to formulate a hypothesis, or proof, that we can not live in a simulation - or at least, a computer simulation.

The proof is based on the fact that computers can not handle infinite numbers, otherwise they will get into infinite loops calculating numbers. So what physical evidence would we expect to find? That something, anything, in the universe is continuous.

While I am in disagreement over this with Steve Savitzky, I believe that space itself is continuous. There is some evidence for this. According to this document from PBS, scientist are trying to solve this matter: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/blogs/physics/2015/10/are-space-and-time-discrete-or-continuous/

The Universe appears to be contain continuous numbers. To date, they haven’t found any evidence that the Universe itself is discreet. If it were, we would expect photons to travel at slightly different speeds depending on what angle they were fired off at and from where they originated.

Interestingly enough, I also found that apparently the frequency Cherenkov radiation is continuous. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherenkov_radiation

Now, I must be fair. Steve disagrees that this is an appropriate way of handling this situation. He maintains that possibly the storage could be large enough to store numbers that we can never physically detect. He argued that we could not detect anything smaller than planck-length.

However, my response to that was we don’t need to detect something that small. We can run an experiment over the course of the size of the universe and try to detect some form of discreetness. This is what scientists attempted in the previous PBS article I cited.

Also, things get weird if the universe is discreet. I hypothesize that if the universe is discreet, then there must be very tiny virtual particles that exist for very short periods of time to maintain the conservation of energy. Otherwise, energy will be lost as a photon travels through space.

I maintain that as long as we find something that is continuous, then that means we cannot live in a simulation.

Had to read this twice to get it completely, I don't believe in any simulation or some sort...
It actually freaks me out...
