The Comet Research Group: Attack of the Killer Comet

in #science8 years ago

We are in serious danger, but with your help we can do something about it
NASA warns there is a small chance that Earth will be hit this century by a skyscraper-sized asteroid named Bennu. It could create a nearly five-mile-wide crater (3 km) -- large enough to wipe out any of Earth’s largest cities.

Want to know the chilling truth? Earth is directly in the path of about 500,000 asteroids and comets, and NASA doesn’t know the location of 498,000 of them! They range in diameter from the size of a house to as wide as a football field, and the largest ones could produce explosions far worse than the world’s largest atomic bombs. Each one is capable of obliterating one of Earth's largest cities.

One of them could be heading for Earth at this moment, and there likely will be no warning, as in 2013, when a space rock blew up over Chelyabinsk, a small city in Russia. The blast damaged more than 7,000 buildings and injured 1,500 people seriously enough to require medical attention.

Earlier, in 1908, another space rock blew up over Tunguska, Russia, flattening more than 80 million trees. If it had detonated over Greater London, Tokyo, or New York City, it would have demolished those cities. Comets are serious threats to Earth, and you can help us learn to stop them.

About Comet Research Group:

The Comet Research Group is part of a non-profit, charitable corporation that collaborates with 63 scientists from 55 universities in 16 countries. Our discoveries have been featured on the History Channel, National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel, PBS’s NOVA, and more than a dozen other TV programs.

NOVA documentary featuring research by the Comet Research Group:

The mission of the Comet Research Group is to accurately assess the effects of comet impacts on human history, to educate the international public about these effects, and, ultimately, to provide world governments with the information they need to stop comets from hitting Earth in the future.

Research shows that Earth gets hit by a dangerous swarm of comet fragments about every three to four thousand years. Most often, the damage is not severe, but at other times the results are catastrophic and nearly global. The chilling news is that Earth is now in a centuries-long episode of increasing bombardments by the shattered remains of a giant comet, one that has hit us again and again for thousands of years. We need to be much better prepared, and you can help us.

How you can help:

This truly is a ‘Star War’ – comets against humans -- and to win, we have to understand comet impacts better. CRG is trying to find out how often city-killing comets hit Earth and what happens when they do - this is the first step toward our ultimate goal of stopping them.

Another major goal is to educate people and world governments to the dangers. We’ve already published more than 50 scientific papers about killer comets. However, we have faced considerable opposition from some scientists and government officials who say, "Don't worry -- no problem." They prefer to ignore the facts. CRG is making progress in convincing people that killer comets are a serious threat, and your contribution will accelerate that plan.

Our universities don’t have the funds needed to make an impact, and world governments would rather spend money on the latest high-tech military hardware. Right now, NASA’s entire budget for detecting killer comets is only $50 million (USD), the cost of a single military helicopter. That’s a tiny amount to spend protecting the world’s cities.

Comet Research Group is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to help fund several expeditions to key locations in the United Stated, Canada, Greenland and the Middle East. Approximately $150,000 is needed to send some of the group's 63+ scientists to these sites. There are 4 days left in the campaign and so far only about $33,940 has been raised.

More recently, British author/journalist Graham Hancock and Randall Carlson, an architectural designer and geological scholar from the United States, appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast to make the case for the research that is being undertaken by the Comet Research Group.
