Leakey's first couple of expeditions

in #science6 years ago (edited)

With his now fueled love for and success around stone tools Leakey set about formalizing his education in anthropology and archaeology at Cambridge.

There he was able to get access to some of the best material and gain valuable field experience from fossil hunting trips to East Africa as part of his studies.

Once qualified he launched an expedition of his own calling it the "East African archaeological expedition" anticlimactically consisting of him and 1 other.

As with Broom and Dart, the Brits weren't encouraging about searches for early man in Africa... Once again pointing to Asia, but Leakey had already found ancient tools scattered everywhere and was convinces that Africa was the "Cradle of mankind".

After the expedition in 1926 and some recognition he arranged another in 1928. This larger "expedition" was able to make very significant discoveries and figure out the stone tool cultural sequence for Kenya.

He attended a conference in Johannesburg in 1929 and totally outshone the, at that time outcast, Professor Dart with his Taung Child skull and as yet unaccepted interpretations.

With another success under his belt plans were made for a 3rd expedition. This one would be the one with Hans Reck to Olduvai to confirm Oldoway Man and look for his tools.

Within days they had 70 odd handaxes and other material.

Oldoway Mans skull now had accompanying tool's... But there would be significant hurdles to overcome.

How about jade...!!!

Our country (aceh) has a variety of jade that can be useful.
but now there is no research about it
there are even some types of jade can cure the disease

As a professional couple, Mary was known for keeping to herself and being particular about the quality and accuracy of her findings; Louis was more of a showman and lecturer, comfortable pushing concepts to larger communities while facing criticism over his forthrightness and the legitimacy of his ideas.

He really was right Africa has got history, I think most of the Africans use such type of tools still in their life, they preserve their culture and it shows that how human race developed from stone age to this Industrial age.

I haven't gone through his biography, but he seems a hell of a discoverer, he was very dedicated towards his work and continued it till he got what he needed. And showed the entire humanity that how humans survived in the stone age, what weapons did they used to protect them selves.

It's a great experience reading about the African history. Interesting discoveries, some of us have studied this throughout school but let it all die after progressing to new levels of education. Thankyou for reminding us about our origin as humans. I feel like digging more into this history for a purpose of accumulating knowledge on our history.

I like the writing of your article is very interesting people to comment on your article ,,,
I want tips and tricks from you ,, please help

The amazing your post, very nice post. Thank you.

Africa has excellent history, africa has great story about horn cape, Pandora box, and million another history stories.

East African Archaeological Expedition. It was a great history.
#Members of the Expedition:
Dr Louis Leakey (Leader / Archaeologist)
Professor Hans Reck (Geologist)
Dr U.T. Hopwood (Mammalian palaeontologist, British Museum)
Vivian Fuchs (Geologist)
J.R.H. Hewlett (Game Warden of Kenya, and Engineer)
#Mission:
To re-examine Professor Reck's 1931 discovery of a human skeleton found with important fossils of extinct species and to find stone-age tools at the site of the discovery; correlate the Olduvai fossils with the Kenyan series; collect new species of fossils for the British Museum.
Thanks for sharing and highlighting this great achievements.
