1st contact binary ever explored.

New years day was also a little known celebration of astronomic proportions.

The new horizons spacecraft did a lightning fast flyby of the most distant object ever explored so far... way beyond pluto in the kuiper belt where comets come from.

Since its discovery Ultima Thule has always be considered a bit odd and now we know why for sure. It's a contact binary, the first ever to be explored, relatively close, by a spacecraft sent from earth.

Oh wow, that's really cool. I saw the news about it, and new that it was in a weird shape, but didn't know it was because of a binary system like that.
