RE: SIMULATED UNIVERSE FLAT EARTH THEORY

in #science5 years ago

Classic full-measure... To start with one thing and end with another trail of thought .

😄😀 it usually happens accidentally.. like the one thing leads to the rest of it in my mind.. but I like when it happens

Stimulated universe is surprisingly interesting to me. From the days of Matrix (the trilogy), I've always wonder if this world was real. Then there's the piece by Renes Descartes about existence and all that.

Ya.. not familiar with Descartes.. I know there's the theory that if simulating universes is possible, it's mathematically close to inevitable that we'd be in one (since there's only one real one but limitless sims that flow out of it).

But then.. it kind of just shifts what "real" even means.. whatever the simulation is, it should operate by a set of rules that the simulator creates. So then it's like the simulator made the rules rather than a god or organic natural forces, and is it really much different than what we thought was going on?

It's funny to think about, like in a sense it could make everything seem pointless, like if it's a simulation wtf does anything matter.. but that was always a good question anyways lol.. and if it's a simulation, your life and our experience here is feeding information to some original source who I guess needs it for some reason. So it actually seems like maybe more of a "purpose" than otherwise.

Flat earth simply feels wrong. Like even if the world was simulated.... I mean, how can a flat world exist? Sounds weird. Like ships should fall off edges of rivers and planes should never return home

But then, it's all because I've always thought the earth was round. Beyond what I read in textbooks, I have no proof.

Ya, it's hard to tell what's truly an intuitive feeling vs what's just based on having thought that way for so long.

If my life depended on it, I'd probably guess that it's round, but I'd worry that I'm just conditioned to think that and screwing up.

All the theories and logic of the universe as we've been taught makes sense.. but I figure theories and models can make sense and be coherent even if they're not what's actually out there. So if I was taught a different model, I wonder if I would also think "hmm ya, seems totally right".

So to me it's like a range of possibility, and probably round, but I don't really care, and fun to think about alternative possibilities.

They have theories about the planes..

Most of what I hear about flat earth is YouTube videos in the background while I fall asleep.. so I remember some broad strokes more than specifics. Not sure how they explain it.. I imagine it has to do with routing and auto-flight technology knowing when to turn, but to the pilot it looks like round earth. Idk.

But they actually go on offense here.. There's a flight path, I think maybe it's like the bottom of South America to Australia where they say you can't find a direct flight. Like it should be a short enough flight on the round earth, and a long one if it's flat earth, and they say you always get a weird layover in Africa or something like that that doesn't make sense.

Idk, if interested you could google it.

And yes, flat earth or not doesn't exactly matter right now. I'm more concerned with getting my shipment. Lol

lul, yes.

I'm going to start with this. Promises to be an interesting read.

Yeah. Like arguments on whether freewill exists or not. We can't be entirely sure but we can reflect on the facts available

If I had to choose between a flat earth and a simulated universe, I'll choose... Not interested. If any of them exists, there's nothing I can do about that.

My point exactly. We're talking about simulated universe because it's a thing (at least mentally). We keep devising new models and ideas in understanding our world. More often than not, people only know the most popular ones. Just as everyone takes it for granted that the earth is round

So to me it's like a range of possibility, and probably round, but I don't really care, and fun to think about alternative possibilities.

I don't either but I like reading new stuff. Good for my easily bored brain

Ya, similar in a lot of ways.. like if there's not free will, I still experience my life as tho I'm making my own decisions.

It isn't practical in terms of how to make better choices or anything.

By the by, sometimes with freewill/determinism, I think it could be like a grid of all possibilities is predetermined, and you choose which path to go down.

And if the universe is infinite, somewhere out there there's another version of "you" living every possible permutation of your life.

::shrugs::

Idk 👅
