🌟What are the biggest stars known to us?🌟

in #science7 years ago

Welcome to another edition of “ask flurgx”!

Some of us know that the Sun which warms our planet is a star.
Some know it´s around 110 times bigger in diameter than the Earth.
Some may even know that astronomers classify it as a yellow dwarf star.
If all this sounds strange to you, I have blogged about the sun in more detail earlier→ click

Calling the sun a dwarf must include that we know stars which are bigger in size than our sun, and indeed we know white „normal“-sized stars, blue and red giants, blue and red super giants - as well as hyper giants, which are usually red.

Most of the giant stars are visible on the night sky with the naked eye, like Beteigeuze, Antares, Aldebaran, etc etc
@jonathanxvi started a blog about the brightest stars on the night sky.
Indeed stars that appear bright in the sky are usually also big in size. However the distance also plays a role in the “scheinbare” helligkeit.

The nearest star is not the brightest and the brightest star is not the nearest nor the biggest.

The biggest star known to us - UY Scuti - can not be seen with the naked eye. Even though it is part of our galaxy. It´s too close to the center of our galaxy, and there are too many clouds and dust between us and the star. One picture of UY Scuti was made by Rutherfurd Observatory in Columbia University.

So the list of the biggest stars in the universe is limited to our home galaxy and our neighboring galaxies, the magelanic clouds. It´s impossible for us to determine the size of stars in other galaxies than those mentioned.

There are many videos about the star size comparison out there, and most of them are worth a look. This one here is a rather short and useful video. Enjoy seeing the sun diminishing and don´t care about the cuts ;)

If you want to think further,
you may want to read something about the size of the universe?

Great post! Interesting material! Thanks dear! In an attempt to imagine infinity)

an advice: try not to imagine but rather feel infinity .. you always know how home feels!

Thanks for the wise words!

As always you have very good post @flurgx.
I am going to enjoy the sunshine this afrenoon and as it looks like we shall have clear skies tonight for more star gazing.

Thanks for the compliment! Wishing you clear skies! Regards to Jupiter and Saturn if you see them 😊

Oh yes, I will see them. ;-) Luckily my balcony is facing south.
Tonight the Jupiter's Great Red Spot is something I am looking forward to see again.

Oh Wow! lots of info here.
"The nearest star is not the brightest and the brightest star is not the nearest nor the biggest."
I learned lots of stuff here... and the name is of the biggest star.!

Thank you! @flurgx

You are very welcome! Thank you for visiting (again)! The journey goes on! 👌 name of the biggest star is uy scuti :-) well the biggest we have discovered so far, I'm sure there are even bigger ones out there

thank you @flurgx. I've learn that thru your post. My son is sad when i told him that Pluto is not a planet anymore but a star and that Pluto has little brothers/sisters as well. But what makes Pluto a star?
Thank for your time...hope I'm teaching my son the right stuff hehehe

Nope sorry Pluto is not a star but a a dwarf planet..
Stars emit light, by themselves..
planets don't ..
I'll get you a link to my solar system post

oh hahaha, so im teaching him the wrong stuff. So Pluto is a dwarf planet..ok wait for the link. thnx

thansk so much, i see there's an english translation. I will read it now.

Have a great weekend.
