Is Dwelling on Failure the Secret of Success?

in #science7 years ago

We are constantly told not to beat ourselves up when we make a mistake, but perhaps we should, Because even tho it's not a pleasant feeling, exposure to that feeling might be the secret to staving off the next mistake.

According to a new study from Ohio State University, people who embrace their failure and the negative emotions that come with it are more likely to succeed in the future. because they don’t protect their ego by thinking they did their best and instead they learn from their mistakes.

But those who didn’t allow themselves to feel emotional after their failures were more likely to fall into the trap of thinking it could not be helped, instead of learning from their mistakes, making them more likely to fail again.

The benefits of failure are well-documented: many scientific discoveries have been made only because an experiment "failed" — that is, didn't produce the expected results.

So next time things go south, try hanging on to that feeling for a while. It could stave off the next one.
