Citizen Science: Project FeederWatch -- Count #21 Report w/Original Photos

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Citizen science is a great way to involve children and adults in the discovery of nature and contributing to scientific research and conservation. Project FeederWatch through Cornell University is a great way to get involved in citizen science. You can learn more at the Project FeederWatch website.

I typically watch birds on Saturday and Sunday. This is my report for 31 March and 1 April 2018.

Bird Watching Notes

Saturday

Saturday was partly sunny, a high temperature of 51 degrees (F), and a low temperature of 28 degrees (F). The wind was from the Northwest with an average speed of 20 mph and gust up to 47 mph.

The day started out with this squirrel leaping up to the black oil sunflower seed feeder for breakfast.

I spotted these two Red-Tailed Hawks in a nest high in a tree.

The nest was swaying in the tree top and reminded me of the song "Rock-a-bye Baby".

Rare Bird to this Area: Red-Naped Sapsucker

When I observed this bird I was not near my camera. It landed in a tree directly in front of me right outside a window. The bird looked like a Hairy Woodpecker but the markings were off and it had red on the nape of its neck.

After the bird flew away I turned to my "Crossley ID Guide" to identify the bird.

Much to my surprise and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology data form I identified the bird as a Red-Naped Sapsucker. Here is a picture from AllAboutBirds.org:

According to the range map this is a bird that is traditionally not in the state of Nebraska. The bird's range is west of the state of Nebraska. This would explain why I only observed the Red-Naped Sapsucker that one-time.

I'm very impressed with this initiative. People, especially children, learn about nature and respect it. Your pics are very amazing, as a photographer you need to be patient, so I'm learning to be patient as well hahaha. Nice post @etcmike.

Raquel :D

Your picture of the snail is very good. To take a picture of a creature that moves at a snail's pace takes some patience.

Have a great week!
Steem on,
Mike

hahaha, yes that's true too, although I haven't had luck with birds; besides; I need another lent, I just have from 18 to 55mm so I will try to buy my lent in the future with my Steemit's profits hahaha!! little by little :D.

Have a great week too! :D

What patience to take these wonderful photographs, I loved to see the woodpeckers up close, I could never see the visitor who was visiting my house, now every day I have the strong song of a bird that I do not recognize what it is. I loved the squirrel very good video, the colorful birds I love, thank you!

It does not let me put a small video of the song that I recorded a few days ago I hope to share it soon, I will learn from your patience and I will try to record a little more.
My thanks also for worrying about the minnows! Blessings ♥
