I can understand your line of thinking, and I once shared it. But recently I have seen people I know join the legions of supporters for rather insane theories. Including a few personal friends.
It's still anecdotal. With how much literacy has improved, I still have a hard time believing people believe crazier shit than they did even 50 years ago. JFK assasination theories are one thing, but remember back when people thought the Pope would control the US through him?
