Who wants to live forever? The science of aging.

in #science6 years ago

Following on from last week's talk with Prof Alexander and his work on regenerative medicine. I spoke to a few researchers involved with a branch of regenerative medicine aimed at reducing or even preventing age related illnesses.

It got me thinking, about the application of regenerative medicine for treating age-related disorders.

Keith Comito briefly talks about such research here:

At first, it may sound a bit unusual, the idea of reducing the effects of aging. But, is such research really so bizarre?
Imagine having an extra 30 healthy years, what could be accomplished if the likes of Einstein, Freyman, and Asimov lived healthily to their 120's...

Could such treatments reduce the costs of medical care? What would the consequences be on our workforce and economy?

Personally, I think that there is merit to such research. At the very least it could reduce the chances of developing diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, etc. However, I do not think that this would be a silver bullet.

Aubrey de Gre talks a bit more about antiaging research here:

Please do let me know what you're thoughts are on such research. Do you think that it's immoral?
Would there be problems such as overpopulation or could such problems spur advances in other technologies such as off-world colonization?

So, who wants to live forever? Well, I do!
:P

Hey mate, hope you're well. I'm tagging @ura-soul on this post because he is also a huge follower of anti-aging research and has written some very interesting posts on the subject

I don't really follow 'researchers' since I mostly already know how to stop ageing ;)
I don't talk about it much since few really listen to what I have to say seriously unless they are already aware of the general information I share and understand it in their own way. To explain it takes a lot of text/words.

To prevent ageing means understanding what ageing is. Ageing is nothing more than the result of cumulative imbalance in self. Death is the ending of vibration when the body and will cannot sustain vibration any more under the weight of denial and dysfunction that has built up in the self.

In short, much of what society calls 'normal' contains within it forms of denial which prevent right understanding and connection to real emotions and all of self. This eventually kills everyone involved in it. Children typically move freely and freely emotionally express, but as they age they are more controlled and it is this control that eventually (largely) leads to ageing. There's a reason why 'management' is also man - agement. <3

Sorry, I just meant you had a shared interest and thought it may be nice to hook you up :-)

That's ok - no need to apologise! :)

Epic. The first Bladerunner was an almost perfect film! :D

it's funny, only today, I was talking with some peeps about AI, Blade Runner and William Gibson (have you read much of his work?)

Congratulations @epicdave! You received a personal award!
