Science Experiment : The Effect of Heat on Matter
What happens if a matter receives or releases heat? If a matter receives or release heat then there will be change in the temperature or states of the matter.
The Effect of Heat on Matter
When you are boiling water, after few minutes later the water turns hot and finally boils. The water turns hot because it receives he Thereby, if an object receives heat then its temperature increases.
An object can not only receive heat but also release it. The temperature of an object decreases if it releases heat. You can observe the changes in temperature due to heat transfer in Activity below :
Objective
Observing the changes in the temperature of a matter due to heat transfer
Equipments and Materials
A basin of hot water, a glass of cold water, 2 pieces of thermometer.
Procedures :
- Place each of the thermometers in the glass contain of cold water and in the basin contain of hot water, then measure their temperature!
- Take the glass and dip it in the basin, leave it for five minutes!
- After five minutes, look at the temperature measured by each thermometer!
- Write down the results on the following table!
From the activity above, we find out that after we dip the glass containing of cold water into the basin filled with hot water, the temperature of water in the basin decreases, while the temperature of water in the glass increases. lt happens because there is a heat transfer from the hot water in the basin to the cold water in the glass.
Conclusion
The heat released by the hot water equals to the heat taken by the cold water. The amount of heat transferred by an object depends on several aspects, such as mass, materials type, and the amount of temperature changes.
