What should we do when robots take most jobs?

in #science8 years ago (edited)

It seems inevitable that robots would take most of our jobs sooner or later.

The solution could be that everyone in the future should be entitled to having a robot (a nonconscious android), which would work for him/her and generate income for its owner, then we could do whatever we want, for example pursue our hobbies (the problem, however, would be for people who have no interest in anything).

But can a nonconscious robot pursue all of our work?
Why has it to be a nonconscious robot?
Because, of course, the problem would arise if we would create a conscious or sentient artificial intelligence - such being could not be treated as a slave (a non paid worker working for us), but would have to be equal to us in rights and obligations. It would be free, as we are, so it could not work for us, it could work only for itself (or himself/herself, as they might be created to have a gender).

Another solution is proposed by Robert Reich, who says that a universal basic income may be the answer:

Also there have been many films and series on those topics, the most recent ones is Humans (second season starting on 30th October 2016 in the UK):

or its Swedish version Äkta människor aka Real Humans (the original series):

"Afraid of robots?
We should be, according to the conventional wisdom. They’re going to take our jobs away.

Maybe there’s another way of looking at it.

Maybe robots should be doing a lot of jobs.

The kinds of jobs that have been created since the Industrial Revolution have liberated us from much of the drudgery of the past, making it conceivable for the first time that people might – for a living! – be ballerinas, full-time musicians, mathematicians, athletes, fashion designers, and much more.

And so with robots. When it comes to jobs that require speed and efficiency, we can’t compete. So maybe we shouldn’t try. Let the robots have those jobs. Someday we may look back and wonder how people ever performed such dehumanizing tasks.

Instead, let’s concentrate on those areas where we excel – tasks that involve relationships, creativity, and human contact. Things that make us human, in other words."

I think he ^ (tom woods) says it best.

Yes, as long as the robots are nonconscious. But when they will be equal or better than us in "relationships, creativity, and human contact" then it would not be that easy. We may become obsolete in the view of the robots we created. :(

they'll just put us in private prisons once they have no need for us. being homeless is becoming a crime in many places.

We're battling bots on this platform! I wonder who will win, the human writers and curators or the bot ones!
