How to increase your brain power
Source
Human brain is one of the most complex and magnificent organ in our body. Our brain gives us awareness of ourselves and of our environment, processing a constant stream of sensory data. It controls our muscle movements the secretions of our glands and even our breathing an internal temperature. Every creative though, feeling and plan is developed inside of our brain and the neurons record the memory of every event in our lives.
Just like by working-out helps your muscles to be strong and develop, any activity that involves practice causes the brain to transmit signals in a specific pattern over and over again allowing for connections between neurons to strengthen. That means your brain gets stronger. But it’s not just mental exercise that can strengthen your noggin, you need to have a balanced diet and good lifestyle practices.
Here are some simple thing you can do to improve your brain power
Do something new
Source
When you challenge your brain and experience something new, it simulates your brain. So don’t fall into a rut following your same old routine.
- Take a different route to work
- Read a section of the newspaper you usually skip
- Try a different recipe for dinner
- Learn a new language
- Do things out of the ordinary.
Restructuring your brain helps create new neural pathways which increases your brainpower.
Exercise regularly
Source
It is been proven that regular exercise helps to increase brain function and enhances neurogenesis. This mean that every time you exercise you are creating new brain cells.
Get off the couch and get moving! Your brain will thank you for it.
Walk outdoors where the terrain isn’t predictable, so that you are perfecting your balance and working your foot-eye coordination at the same time.
Train your memory
Source
How often do you hear people say “I wish I had a better memory” yet no-one does anything about this. If you discipline yourself to memories phone numbers and other important numbers (passport, credit card, insurance, driving license) you will start to see a marked improvement in your memory.
Be curious
Source
Instead of taking everything at face value, get into the habit of questioning everyday things/products, services that you come into contact with. By being “curious” and questioning everything, you force your brain to innovate and crate new ideas.
Curiosity may have killed that cat, more importantly it created super important things like electricity and computers!
Think positive
Source
Stress and anxiety kill existing brain neurons and also stop new neurons from being created. Research has shown that positive thinking, especially in the future tense, speeds up the creation of cells and dramatically reduces stress and anxiety. Try and get handle on negative thoughts and make an effort to replace them with positive once.
Eat well
Source
The brain is an energy hungry organ, which comprises 2% of your body’s weight but gobbles up more than 20% of your daily energy intake. So you to have eat throughout the day to optimize brain power (balanced diet) and drink at least 8 glasses of water since dehydration can lead to memory loss and confusion.
Choose green leafy vegetables, low-fat protein sources like fish, whole grains, mushrooms, magnesium rich nuts and seeds, eggs, antioxidant rich berries, avocado and tomatoes.
Yoga and meditation
Source
According to the studies the chronic stress can damage our brain. So you can protect and strengthen your brain by engaging is activities or lifestyle habits that decrease the firing of your stress response. One of the best ways to do this is by developing a mediation practice, just 10 to 20 minutes a day is more than enough.
Get enough sleep
Source
Sleep is like a mini detox for the brain. This is when your body regenerates cells and removes all the toxins that have built up during the day. Get to bed between the hours of 9 Pm and midnight to benefit from the most effective hours of sleep.
Ditch the sugar
Source
A diet high in sugar can be harmful to the brain, inducing inflammation, oxidative stress and poor insulin regulation. Your goal is to follow a diet that helps you to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. This means eating fish, some meat, a lot of vegetables, some nuts and seed, some fruits and very little sugar.
Ban the calculator
Source
Remember back at school when we were taught to use our brains to do simple sums like times tables? It’s incredible how we now rely on devices like smart phones and laptops to calculate really simple equations. Resist the urge to work things out using an external device and use the device you were born with – your brain.
Thank you for the wonderful post. Yes, doing something new refreshes our mind . We are capable of doing many things but we just say and do not work on it. Everything is possible if we determine and get off the monotonous life.
