Plastic Waste on the Beach

Yes, I am on one of my hobby horses again! It's time for an update on plastic pollution.

First, Let's Look at Plastic Mess.

Waste Plastic Collected in a Room

Doesn't this look awful? It looks bad, smells bad and has been a lot of work to collect. Now there's the problem of disposing of it! You just can't win with plastic.

Now, the mess is everywhere. You see it in the streets and countryside alike. The sea does not escape the scourge of plastic.

There are an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic of all kinds ending up in the sea every year. Greenpeace tells us,

'That’s a truckload of rubbish a minute.' (https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/what-we-do/oceans/plastics/)

Please do check out the Greenpeace link for more information about how you can help.

Let's Look at What's Being Done About it.

Plastic-Eating Enzyme

Yes. this sounds a bit Sci-Fi but it has happened. Don't get too excited though, it's in its infancy.

An enzyme was accidentally found that will break down some forms of plastic back into its original components. The idea is to develop this process for plastic bottles.

Once the process has produced the original components, then the intention is to make new plastic from them.

I'm waiting to see this actually happening before I decide if I think it's a good thing or not.

Plastic Ready to be Recycled

Recycling plastic items you have used helps to cut down the pollution. Many countries have schemes in place but they can be expensive to run.

Where I live, they only recycle hard plastic because soft plastic is expensive to process. So much of it has to be collected before it would be financially viable.
