RE: Should we fear Artificial Intelligence?

in #science8 years ago

I believe the immediate future of AI itself is nothing to fear. Like any other technological advancement, it is neither 'good' nor 'bad' but neutral.
The thing to potentially fear is the motives of those heavily invested in current AI. (e.g. DARPA).
However, the longer term prospect of a superior new sentient alpha life-form treating us benevolently is overly optimistic imo. The best case scenario is we will be akin to domesticated 'housepets'.
Worst case scenario, we are perceived as a potential threat and eliminated. I doubt very much this would involve 'Terminator' style scenarios. I doubt any AI would be necessarily vindictive in nature.
More likely, it would develop a more devastating strand of a common virus such as the cold or flu that could target and attack biological systems. And on that note, have a nice day :)
