Schrodinger’s cat no longer just a thought experiment

in #science7 years ago

A new article reveals that quantum physicists have found a way to test the popular Schrodinger’s cat experiment. Their method will allow them to know the exact point an object switches between classical and quantum physics. The result of experiments like this might help to bring us a step closer to a unified theory of physics.

The experiment involves the use of light waves and a beam splitter along with a bit of imagination:

The University of Calgary’s Anastasia Pushkina, co-author of the research, said: “In essence, we cause interference of two 'cats' on a beam splitter.

“This leads to an entangled state in the two output channels of that beam splitter.

“In the event this detector shows a certain result, a 'cat' is born in the second output whose energy is more than twice that of the initial one.”

When the team measured the results, they found that they could convert a pair of negative ‘Schrodinger’s cats’ with an amplitude of 1.15 to a single positive ‘cat’ with an amplitude of 1.85 in steps which could have huge implications for the quantum physics.

The quantum universe is even more strange than the classical universe which is strange in itself. On the quantum stage time seems to not even exist as particles can be entangled and act as one across an infinite distance. These experiments show that at an exact point we have a position in space and a point in time, and a single cat.

As far as the details of this experiment, if you are a physicist you might understand it better than me but it is still interesting because it provides new knowledge which we did not have before. For those who want an explanation for what this experiment is about:

That's a great post.
keep going @dana-edwards

Great article ! Upvoted & Followed.

Something different,,,keep it up @dana-edwards

I need to brush up on terms, theories and the latest in quantum physics but I like to share the first idea that comes to mind when someone posts something as thought provoking as this: You mentioned "...might help to bring us a step closer to a unified theory of physics". It may also lead to increasing consideration of theories relating to unified consciousness (or simultaneous unified and individual consciousness). This is the stuff that flips my switch. Nice one, Dana!

I was a lover of physics and would go and take extra miles to dig a fact then. But struggles of life makes me bend to the direction of better and greener lights just to get life going.

See how I now lookvat a physics experiment as a layman.

Nice post.

Well informed writeup

I wish i understood what the hell is happening in that experiment so i could write an eloquent comment :D

I checked the article and there are no links for further publications or anything containing physics. So as it might be a nice article promoting physics for not scientists, there is no content for scientists and therefore no way to check the exact content and the results of the experiment. Which is then a little bit shady...

Excellent ! But i have to "wonder" about calling injecting interference "cats" .. this sounds very much like basic power theorem. and actually 'pumping' a laser, yes the outcome produces more power. Calling it awareness of halflife cat is a little reaching imho. But i do love the premise ... One step closer to unification ? perhaps !
