TANKS Shell Types [part.1]

in #science8 years ago

As the development of the time especially the military field came the latest breakthrough to replace tools and weapons of war over time.

Especially in parts of cavalry that progress from horse to wheel. with the idea of

replacing horses with armored machines to replace them in the battlefields, we know war with tanks, which have the efficiency of killing and reducing casualties on the battlefield. but a layered vehicle is not powerful without bullet.

1.Armor Piercing (AP)

The earliest and simplest one has a steel penetration function in the tank. AP is made of solid steel with high carbon content, which increases the hardness of steel.

Penetration of steel plate is achieved by kinetic energy, from Bullet AP. If the mass or AP bullet velocity increases then the penetration / penetration ability of the tank is very large. and unlucky if AP Bullet velocity decreases due to high air resistance, penetration ability decreases.

And its usual if the AP bullet is used properly can kill the crew on the tank, tank ammunition exploded if translucent, damaging the tank machine or also destroy the hull and sleeve shots on the tank. so the danger also if inside the tank.

2. Armor Piercing, Capped (APC)

To improve armor protection should increase the thickness of the steel plate, and consequently the excess baggage on the tank, facing the hardening of steel plates / thickening of the thickness of the tankers was common during the Second World War. As the name suggests, the hardening process increases the hardness of parts of the steel plate facing outwards. Increasing this hardness will make it harder for the shell / bullet to penetrate the tank, and perhaps even cause it to bullets on the tanks.

An Innovation created to this problem is placing a hat on a regular armor piercing shell / AP bullet. The hat has a very hard tip, designed to break hard-coated steel, and soft steel bodies, designed to protect the shell armor piercing from steel forces that allow its bouncing or failing to penetrate.

But this type of bullet can only penetrate the outside just does not get to the inside because of confinement penetration due to the cap on the shell and reduced its speed due to the weight of the cap on the shell itself.

Armor Piercing, Ballistic Cap (APBC)

Since the most suitable nose shapes to penetrate the steel plate are not the best in terms of aerodynamics, it is common to mount ballistic caps, or glass, in the shell. Ballistic hats are made of thin, brittle materials, which are destroyed at impact without disturbing the penetration process. Because of the thin ballistic cap, the negative impact of the lack of mass is negligible, and more than offset by deceleration declines due to better aerodynamics.

An important note about the ballistic hat is that the presence of a ballistic hat is far from always explicit in the name of the American shell. It is therefore necessary to find an explanation or shell scheme to define the design.

3. Armor Piercing, Capped, Ballistic Cap (APCBC)

Since the most suitable nose shapes to penetrate the steel plate are not the best in terms of aerodynamics, it is common to mount ballistic caps, or glass, in the shell. Ballistic hat is made of thin, brittle material, which is crushed on steel without disturbing the penetration process. Because the ballistic cap is thin, it has a negative impact of the lack of mass, and is more than offset by a decrease in decelleration / pressure due to better aerodynamics. This essentially improves the capability of accuracy rather than penetration
