Myth About Lightning [part.1]

in #science7 years ago

In 1752, Benjamin Franklin discovered the facts about lightning. He conducted an experiment by making a large-size silk kite flying at the time of the storm and the kite was connected to a metal cord connected to a thread with a key hanging at the end, then he flew it in the middle of a storm . But is that right......? Franklin's story of how he discovered electricity in the atmosphere has caused many question marks over the past two and a half centuries since his experiment was done, what we know is that it also helps improve our understanding of how lightning and electricity occur.

Associated with the surprises he received when his fingers touched the key on his kite, Franklin concluded that lightning is a release of natural energy. When this discovery is considered one of the greatest early discoveries in the world of science, there are still some limitations to our understanding of how lightning occurs, where it will grab and what to do when a lightning storm is clear: Do not fly a kite at a time storm...

Franklin's story and his kite are one of the myths about lightning. Many wise counsel from our parents on this matter that is now considered ancient or even something wrong to do. Here is a myth about lightning that many circulating in the community, and maybe we've done one of them?

Lightning never strike more than once in the same place

The Empire State Building, for example, was once used as a laboratory to get lightning because of its natural ability. A long, towering metal rod at its peak not only serves as Godzilla's "Cotton Bud", the 444-meter skyscraper is designed to receive lightning strikes. This building has been struck by lightning from all directions as much as 25-100 times a year, depending on who we ask, and got three different attacks in one night in spring 2011. This is because the lightning cage "attracted" to a point that the peak in an area, those who searched for a narrow road to reach the ground, this made the Empire State Building out as a Chrysler building next to it accompanied by lightning crashing downtown Manhattan.

Worse, tall buildings actually also help produce lightning, this is because during a lightning storm occurs, the object on the ground has an electric charge that is different from the charge in the cloud. When most lightning occurs from clouds and moves down to the ground, sometimes, lightning can travel from high-rise buildings and antennas when the electrical charge in the cloud changes rapidly, in other words lightning can happen from the ground to the air!
