This kind of thinking applies to many areas in and outside of medical research. Most studies, peer reviewed or otherwise, do not actually show the efficacy or true potential of a treatment or methodology only, as you put it, promise. It is very rare that one study will change the way we view things, rather it is the build up of confirmation that results in practical change!
