Storage Devices

This is a hard drive, a storage device that lets you read and write. Without this storage device you may not able to run your computer unless there is a main memory which is (RAM) . Other cases like small integrated circuits do no need a secondary storage because it is already the main memory. In order to run a computer you will be needing a main memory and a secondary storage which this would be your internal hard drive.

If you don't know how hard drives works. It is simple, it has magnetic disk inside. The actuator arm which is the writer sends electrical impulse to the magnetic disk and it is written, then there would be a reader after the writer in which it detects the signals like a Morse code.

Morse code

How does the machine read and writes data into the storage?

It sends strong electrical impulses or weak electrical impulses to that section, all known as Binary code. Binary code is much more similar to Morse code. Morse code sends messages like (dashes and dots) while the computer only communicates with 1 and 0. The 1's are for Strong impulses and 0's are weak impulses which we call this as Bit .

The machine needs to read at least 8 Bit or 8 digits of 10100010 known as Bytes. If you may wonder on how 1's and 0's are converted here are the conversions.

Types of storage devices

There are a few types of storage devices. Like Floppy disks, Universal Serial Bus & Optical disks which are Compact disks, Digital Video Disk and Bluray disks. I wont be going into Floppy disk also the USB since we will be tackling more about mosfets maybe in the next video.

The Optical disks are somewhat similar to the Magnetic, but it uses lasers in order to read and write. The difference between the three optical disks needs a specific laser in order to read and write. The compact disks needs an infrared laser to read and right, the DVD also need a red laser light, and finally blu ray disks needs a blue laser light. Which you may also wonder why we need specific drivers to read sorts of disks.

Internet so slow? Always remember to read if it is Mb or MB. There is a big difference between the two Megabits and Megabytes. What do you think?
