Most Important Scientific Discoveries of 2016

in #science8 years ago

From the Industrial Revolution the human race began to take giant strides in science. In more than 200 years the exact age of the Earth, the milky way and the universe was discovered, but at the same time found the way to destroy itself in just one second.

This year science has discovered new ways to increase people's quality of life. It looks like 2016 will be the year that the most aggressive diseases will become as compliant as a cold or a headache. These and other discoveries you will know next.

Virtual Reality

While most of the high-quality VR experiences require powerful and expensive computers, a viewfinder that transports people to other realities has finally been made available to all. The device was patented by Sony and works together with the PlayStation 4. So traveling between dimensions will be as easy as turning the console on.

If the viewer becomes popular it is likely that in the next few years it will be sold separately and at affordable prices.

Gravitational Waves Inside Black Holes

The Gravitational Wave Observatory of the Laser Interferometer (LIGO) detected gravitational waves from a pair of black holes that collided 1.3 billion years ago. It is the first time we have been able to feel these undulations through space-time, which will give scientists a new way of studying the cosmos.

Virus that Fights Cancer

Scientists have long known that viruses can cause the immune system to attack the cancer, but modifying viruses without affecting our resistance to them has taken time. By the end of 2015, IMLYGIC became the first anti-FDA approved viral cancer drug. The modified herpes virus is injected into a tumor, where it can ignite an immune response to cancer.

Our Solar System May Have a Ninth Planet

Scientists found evidence that a giant planet, the size of Neptune, could inhabit the edge of our solar system; Approximately 10 or 20 times further than Pluto. Although the existence of the planet is still being confirmed, the evidence suggests that it is there. If the speculations are correct, our solar system will be added one more member.

Dengue Vaccine

Each year, 400 million people contract dengue, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that cause high fevers, severe headaches, vomiting and sometimes death. This year, the World Health Organization recommended the first vaccine to prevent dengue and inoculations have begun in hot areas like Brazil and the Philippines.

Living Planet

It was discovered that a rocky planet - very similar to Earth - exists in another solar system which could be habitable for the human. Although we do not know if it is exactly an intergalactic version of our home, the discovery enables the dreams of moving the human race to another place in the universe.

First Trip Around the World on a Solar Plane

Pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg landed the Solar Impulse 2 in Abu Dhabi, marking the end of an epic flight of 26,000 miles of solar energy around the world. The trip was made so that the commercial airlines discover alternative ways to work without damaging the environment.

The Ozone layer is Regenerated

16 years ago there was a huge hole in the ozone layer, the Earth's protection against UV radiation. This year was remeasured and it was discovered that the layer regenerated 2.4 million square kilometers.

Tasmanian Devil's Milk is an Alternative Antibiotic

As time passes the bacteria become more resistant to antibiotics. Luckily it has just been discovered that Tasmanian devil's milk could fight against bacterial diseases.

Pandas are No Longer in Danger of Extinction

It may not be a scientific discovery but it is good news for human life. In September the International Union for Conservation of Nature moved the panda bears from their list of "threatened" to simply "vulnerable." And the pandas are not the only ones, because the monarch butterflies also stopped being in danger.

This time there is no bad news on the subject of science, on the contrary, there are significant discoveries. With new ways of combating cancer and dengue will increase the quality of life of the world's population and will cease to be the diseases that have killed more people in history.

In fact, the gravitational waves are not 'inside' but result from their merging. Therefore, the word 'from' would be preferable.

Very nice summary by the way! :)
