In my opinion the most serious consequence of this combination of poor understanding and sensationalism in the coverage of scientific discoveries is that it fuels the multiple conspiracy theories targeting the pharmaceutical industry. Since many people are constantly told that every new incremental discovery made in a specific field means that we will cure all types of cancer tomorrow, it's a small leap to thinking that all the solutions are readily available but the industry chooses to hide it from us to keep making money out of less efficient treatments.
