Get Learnt 2

If you're like me, you periodically think about how far technology has come and wonder about the amazing possibilities the future holds as we advance further and further. And with all the sci-fi movies and special effects in today's media, it's almost as if we can get a glimpse of the future.

But we're pretty advanced NOW with all our smart shit, right?

-Nikolai Kardashev presses his lips against the mic and murmurs-
"Nyet."

In 1964, Ol' Niko here proposed a scale that could define a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy they were able to collect. Originally only 3 types were proposed, I, II, and III, but since then the idea has been expanded to incorporate IV, V, and even 0. But let's just focus on 1 - 3.
While all of this is completely hypothetical, given enough time and resources, each type of civilization level is completely possible to obtain.
You know, given the civilization doesn't suck butt and kill itself.

So let's take a look at what technological advancement REALLY means and see where Earth 2018 ranks!

Type I Civilization - Earth 2200 AD - Planetary Civilization Energy Consumption: 7 x 10^17 watts (a lot)

To achieve this level, a civilization must harness all the energy that falls on a planet from its parent star. This means for Earth to reach this level, we must consume every ounce of solar energy the sun shines on us.

Not 90%, not 99.999%.

ALL. ENERGY.

That also goes for all possible energy sources on Earth. All is controlled. And in order to do that, the Earth would have to be completely covered in man made structures that could collect the solar energy.

But while theoretically possible, this scenario was and IS highly unlikely. So the Kardashev Scale rules were slightly altered from "All energy from X" to "Energy equivalent to all energy from X or whatever fuck it". This meant that a civilization could now be a type I by harnessing energy through fusion, antimatter, solar satellite, and other methods. As long as the amount of energy consumed equaled the potential energy from its parent star's, it basically qualified.

So salty nerds retcon'd the scale so Earth could eventually stick its dick in the door. Cool. But the qualifications for type II are a little harder to curve in our favor.

Type II Civilization - Solar System 5200 AD - Stellar Civilization Energy Consumption: 4 x 10^33 watts (a lotter)

So a type I civilization is defined by harnessing all available energy on a planet. This includes both the potential energy given from the sun and energy collected from the planet. Basically, the only energy consumed is gained ON the planet. But when a civilization upgrades to type II, it harnesses ALL ENERGY WITHIN ITS SOLAR SYSTEM.

Oh, you WAIT for solar energy to reach your planet? We put the sun in a FUCKEN CAGE and suck that shit from the solar tit

Type II civilizations use their parent star as a battery, harnessing ALL of its energy directly. The best method proposed for this is a Dyson Sphere, a cage-like structure that would completely encompass the sun and distribute energy among all other planets. Yes, I said PLANETS.

At this point, the civilization has colonized all planets within it's solar system and harness their energy just like a type I harnesses its single planet's energy. Again, just like with type I, a civilization isn't inherently REQUIRED to colonize all planets in its solar system, just consume energy equal to if they DID. But if you managed to cage the sun, it's probably safe to say you control most other planets.

If this seems like an impossible feat, you're probably right. Just because something is possible in theory doesn't make it ACTUALLY POSSIBLE. But my boi Niko didn't just think it possible, he thought you could go one step further.

Type III Civilization - Milky Way 1,000,000 AD - Galactic Civilization Energy Consumption: 4 x 10^44 watts (a lottest)

Finally, we reach the pinnacle of technological advancement within a civilization. You thought harnessing all possible energy from a solar system was insane? How about an ENTIRE GALAXY

Essentially, type III occurs when the methods for type II are applied to every star and planet within the local galaxy. At this point, the civilization controls everything and acts as the local galaxy Gods that do whatever they want. As of now, it's concluded that type III civilizations are either extremely rare, or do not exist at all within our Universe.

From this point, you can carry this idea forward by assuming the next level (Type IV) is the control of the entire Universe and after that (Type V) is the control of multiple Universes. But let's be honest, we'd kill ourselves LONG before that.

So those are the 3 main levels of advanced civilizations. Do you know which one Earth currently is?

Type 0 Civilization - Earth 2018 AD - Trashboat Civilization Energy Consumption: 4 x 10^12 (weenie hut juniors)

Yep, Niko said we didn't even make it to type I so some salty nerd invented a type 0 so Earth could at least rank on the board.

Suck it, Kardashit.

To be more accurate, Earth ranks around 0.73 according to Carl Sagan and his fancy maffs. But even at 0.73, we still need to consume over 5 orders of magnitude more energy to attain type I status. Futurists theorize we could reach type I in 100 - 200 years, but humans are well-known butt suckers so don't get your hopes up.

It's good to finally have time to do these posts again. I know this one was short but I hope you all find this an interesting read! I'll have more time to devote to Get Learnt in the coming few weeks so I can start dumping buckets of science on you fine ladies and gents ONCE MORE
