TYPES OF CLOUDS
Weather sciencetis use these names to describe the main cloud formations. They also use combinations of these words, suc as cirro-stratus,strato-cumulus and cumulo-nimbus. Cirro stratus for example, means
spread out layer of cirrus clouds. People who study eather also use other
words such as alto, which means "high". The combinations alto-stratus or
alto-cumulus, for example tell us how high these cliuds are.


CUMULUS
Cumulus is a latin word means "heap" these puffy white cloud heap up in
the thick masses. Shape like a dome on the top and flat on the bottom,
they look like mountains in the sky. Cumulus clouds often form on hot
summer after-noons and usually 4,000 to 5,000 feet above the earth. When
they become thick and heavy with water, cumulus clouds maybe develop
into thunderheads or thunderclouds so that the presence of many of them in
the sky may often means it's going to rain.


CIRRUS
Cirrus is a latin word means "curl" or "ringlet" cirrus clouds are forming
high in the sky, are feathery wisps of curly white ice crystals.
These delicate clouds which appear in dry weather, form at an altitude of
from five to ten miles above the ground. They are the highest clouds in the
sky and move along rapidly in the winds.
Cirrus clouds are often storm warning.


STRATUS
Stratus is also Latin word means "spread out" this described the best
width of these fog like clouds. They appear at low altitude, generally ranging
around 2,000 to 7,000 feet. Spread out in calm flat layers status. Cloud
often means bad weather ahead.


NIMBUS
Nimbus is a Latin word means " rain storm" and so, nimbus clouds are
rain clouds. These dark gray clouds do not have any definite shape and
appear at low altitudes over wife are of the sky.
