We know that in recent decades polyolefins have become the most widely used polymer materials in various industrial areas as well as large pollutants. So, today, there is a strong interest in the study and synthesis of materials consisting of biodegradable polymers from natural sources. The cationic properties of chitosan offer good opportunities to take advantage of the interaction that can establish its electrons with numerous compounds. Being one of the most versatile biomaterials of nature.
Motivated by this background and in the search for new materials with improved properties, in our research, blends of polyethylene and chitosan were evaluated in the absence and presence of a compatibilizing agent, hoping that these blends could be applied in biomedical area, especially as hospital product films, wound protection, agricultural films and food packaging for their biodegradable and biocompatible properties. In addition, the incorporation of the computational chemistry helped to predict the types of interactions that act in the compatibilization of the mixtures, through mechano-quantum calculations, opening new perspectives for the study of biocompatible polymeric materials, allowing to lay the bases and to reduce the costs in future research.
