Los tardígrados (o también conocidos como osos de agua) son una especie animal de la familia de los ecdysozoa. Estos invertebrados tienen un tamaño minúsculo de tan solo 0,5 mm.Una de las características más importantes de esta especie y que la ha colocado en el ojo científico en los últimos años es su capacidad de resistencia a condiciones extremas.

 Los científicos han estudiado y siguen estudiando a este curioso animal por su resistencia a todo tipo de hábitat. No sería descabellado pensar que algún día la raza humana podría vivir en condiciones que no se podrían soportar a día de hoy, gracias a este pequeño amiguito.

 ¿Por qué este pequeño animalito es tan bueno para sobrevivir en diferentes ambientes? 

Los tardígrados usan un proceso llamado "criptobiosis", el cual se activa cuando estos no están en contacto con el agua que les sirve de alimento, entonces su cuerpo entra en un estado de deshidratación en el cual pueden bajar la cantidad de agua en su sistema desde un 85% hasta un 3%, de esta forma el metabolismo y demás procesos quedan suspendidos, pudiendo permanecer en este estado hasta por un poco más de cuatro años.

 Se especula que los osos de agua podrían sobrevivir hasta 120 años en este estado de hibernación, sin embargo, no hay nada comprobado hasta la fecha. De todas formas, sin importar el tiempo que sean capaces de sobrevivir, se han realizado varios estudios que han demostrado las condiciones extremas a las que pueden ser sometidos los tardígrados.

 Se ha descubierto que los osos de agua pueden vivir a temperaturas de -272°C y 151°C, además de esto pueden resistir presiones de hasta -6000 atm. Esto ha probado que el lugar donde vive el oso de agua puede ser muy variado y abierto las posibilidades a nivel científico para un mayor campo de estudio con respecto a estos seres vivos, además se sabe que estos animalitos pueden soportar 100 veces más la radiación que podría soportar un ser humano. Investigaciones recientes han demostrado que son capaces de sobrevivir en el espacio exterior
