Several times a year, the Moon passes exactly between the Earth and the Sun. It also happens that the Earth goes exactly between the Sun and the Moon. We then observe eclipses. Correspondingly Sun or Moon.

Solar eclipse🌞

Solar eclipse is one of the greatest coincidences in nature. The sun, which is 400 times the size of the moon, is also 400 times farther away than Earth. Therefore, the Sun and the Moon have almost the same angular dimensions for the observer from Earth. Case? We do not know this, but it allows us to enjoy the periodic covering of our huge star by our tiny Moon.😎

Every month, during the new moon, the moon passes between earth and sun. Because the Moon's orbit is inclined relative to the Earth's orbit, its shield travels under or over the Sun's shield. However, at least twice a year, the New Moon is exactly on the Earth - Sun line. Then there is an eclipse. Eclipse can be partial when the discs of the Moon and the Sun do not coincide perfectly. In this situation, the Moon covers only a part of the solar shield as in the photograph above.👆

Another type is the ring eclipse (photo above👆), when the Moon is located in the most distant point of its elliptical orbit, and its shield is not large enough to completely cover the Sun. A luminous ring is created then. The most spectacular are the total eclipses (the first photograph of the article👆), when the Sun's shield disappears completely. The shadow of the moon falling to the surface of the Earth is only about 200 km wide and it travels with a belt of several hundred kilometers long. The lucky ones in this belt observe a wonderful phenomenon lasting a few minutes - a total solar eclipse. They occur quite rarely, on average around 1.5 years. In Poland, the closest one will appear only in 2135. There is nothing left for us as a trip to another place to see this beautiful phenomenon in our lifetime.😎

It occurs more often, but it is not as effective as the solar eclipse. Earth's shadow is much larger and it is easier to cover. During the semi-shadow eclipse, the Moon travels only through the side areas of the Earth's shadow, slightly darkening only. When the Moon passes close to the center of the Earth's shadow, we observe a partial eclipse - the so-called nibbled Moon as pictured above. 👆 On average, every 17 months the Moon is completely eclipsed. The only thing that reaches us then is the sun's rays broken in the Earth's atmosphere giving the moon a reddish brown color. Due to the large shadow of the Earth, such eclipse lasts for a long time, because it is about 2 hours and is available for the entire Earth's hemisphere, where the night reigns. Reddish-brown, so-called Bloody Moon during total eclipse.👇
