Maybe you mean RED MERCURY SULFIDE?

it is an oil colour called VERMILION or chinese red or cinnabar red

Highley toxic and valueable - got replaced by cadmium red, but Vermilion is faster drying.
If you like the italian painter TITIAN you probably know it from his paintings.
