Quantum entanglement and its exploitation by nature

Quantum entanglement

Ever heard of quantum entanglement? everything that begins with the word "Quantum" is mostly weird stuff. (SPOILER: This one's weird too) and don't worry, there's no usage of Math in this post. :P

So basically when two quantum particles are created together (like twins) in a way that each of the particles cannot have quantum state independent of each other.

We can absolutely predict the properties of the other particle by observing the first one, no matter how far they are.

This phenomenon is called Quantum Entanglement also Einstein called it "Spooky action at a distance."

for example, imagine we have one particle in India other in California, and both are entangled.

If we measure the spin of the particle in India as UP, then we know the particle in California will have a spin DOWN when measured.

(A spin is just one of the properties of the quantum particles like Position, Momentum and more)

Quantum Entanglement in nature

Mother nature is the best engineer we know of, and it exploits laws of the universe in ways that we don't even understand.

Take bird migration for example, did you know birds use the phenomenon of quantum entanglement in the process of navigation for migration.

Birds use this protein called cryptochromes to sense the weak magnetic field of the earth.

Free radicals

One of the most popular theories is based on the idea that incoming photons excite light-sensitive proteins called cryptochromes in the retina of a bird's eye. This results in an electron being transferred between two molecules within the protein. The two resulting free-radical molecules each have an unpaired electron but, because they were produced simultaneously, the spins of the two electrons are correlated. The two electron spins form a coherent quantum state that is affected by weak external magnetic fields, such as the geomagnetic field. This interaction affects the chemical reactivity of the free-radical molecules and ultimately the signals that they send to the brain.

There are various other examples of the application of quantum mechanics by animals in nature like photosynthesis, sense of smell in humans and more.

This is amazing, i will look more into it. It is fascinating what you can discover by observing nature closely. Great post!

nature is awesome.
thanks for reading, mate. :)

This is dope... i knew about the entanglement.. but had never heard that about the bird migration... super interesting

Thanks, mother nature is the best engineer we've got. :P everything we discover she always seems to already exploit it. :P scientist are like "We discovered quantum tunneling." and mother nature is like "Meh!"

Thank you, I was afraid of the word "Quantum" :-) - so you did a right guess & encouraged me to read further.

I liked that you referred to nature and gave the birds example. I once heard that it is still a phenomena how birds find their way resp. navigate in this impressive art. I read a very interesting book about animals finding their ways and other fascinating behavior or ability. The author is a British guy named Rupert Sheldrake and he gives some people headaches because of his unusual approach of science.

I forgot the title of his book but if you are interested you can find it in the net.

I'll definitely try it. :P
Thanks for reading Erika. :)

The planets and the sun sure do look like the model of an atom. If life is a fractal than we are all quantumly entangled :-) I made a word

The planet and the sun are not like the structure of the atom, people often picture it like that. Read more, and maybe life is a fractaly, we don't know that for sure now. I made a word too :P

Thanks bro :)
