The distinctive aroma of the smell of rain is called Petrichor. This odor is derived from the oil produced by certain plants which will later be absorbed by soil and rocks and will eventually be released into the air with a compound called Geosmin.
The word Petrichor comes from Greek, petra which means stone, and ichor, a liquid that flows in the vessels of the gods in Greek mythology. This term was coined in 1964 by two CSIRO researchers, Isabel Joy Bear (Australia) and Roderick G. Thomas (Britain), for articles in the journal Nature.
