Vertical farms, how they will save us.

in #science8 years ago (edited)

When most of you hear the word farm you think of large sprawling fields filled with edible plants, turns out that is not that efficient.

Vertical farms are far better in almost every way.

They pack large amounts of crops into a vertical unit that can be more than 10 stories high. This being a controlled environment and 10 times the density increases the density to far over 10 times that of regular farmland.

They decrease water loss

They are in a sheltered environment with no soil for the water to sink into, that means that we can collect it and re-use it. The goal of this Indore farm is to get 98% water efficiency. For example the average farm uses 105 liters of water for a pound of lettuce while this farm will it down to 0.11 liter minimum..... an amazing difference.

(not the actual machinery lol)

They decrease manpower needed.

The farm mentioned above is slated to be done by 2017. It will be nearly fully automated and will decrease the manpower needed by 50% all by automating its growth from seedling to harvest.

we have used 40% of available farmland.

We are running out of farmland. With our population growing as exponentially we need all of those factors to stay alive. We are running out of clean water farmland and space for us to live and build. This will be cheaper easier and faster we only need to fund them to get them off the ground. The water tables around the world are falling and are already destroying crop yields.

Climate change is causing more and more natural disasters, our crops are the most vulnerable part of our species. We must protect them at all costs.

They increase decentralization.

They are built in major cities and can produce enough food to feed large amounts of people (like the one above that will produce around 30 thousand heads of lettuce a day, in the middle of the city. Most farms are out in the country taking up large amounts of space, as we expand we will need that space and need to produce the food closer to us. A large amount of the cost of producing food is shipping it to cities where it is eaten.

Farm up, beer down.

Certainly a very interesting subject. I built one using 1.5 litre pet bottles and grew strawberries. Thanks and UPVOTED!
I wrote and article that shows a natural treatment for Parkinson's perhaps you can have a look and upvote it if you like it.
