General Relativity -Part 2- Gravity

in #science7 years ago

Once gravity is added, special relativity becomes general relativity

After Einstein's papers on special relativity he struggled to add gravity and acceleration to the mix. Before it was thought that gravity was instantaneous, but with our new understanding of the universe that is impossible. Eventually he came to a new conclusion, that few people expected.

The Force of Gravity

Before this point everybody thought of gravity as a force, like electromagnetism, just a lot weaker. This made sense under newtonian physics, but didn’t work so well once relativity was introduced. The force needed a way to interact with other bodies through space. Eventually Einstein came to the conclusion, that it literally was through space, meaning Gravity bends Space-Time, although he did not get to this without first thinking about acceleration.

Another realization hit Einstein, gravity and acceleration feel exactly the same. You can accelerate a rocket ship fast enough to feel a force of gravity equal to Earth’s, and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Every experiment would show the exact same results. As you accelerate upward, light bends downward. That is how he came to the conclusion that gravity must bend space-time.[1][4]

Warping Space-Time

It turns out warping space-time has lot of effects. It even changes geometry. On a flat piece of paper all the angles of a triangle equal 180 degrees. That holds true everywhere, right? Well no actually, that only applies to flat space. Space on a sphere for example, is not flat. This means the rules are different. On a sphere lines are not “straight”, they follow the curve of the Earth.

This “great circle route follows the curve of the Earth. Now imagine making triangles out of that type of line, the angles will equal more than 180 degrees, although how much more depends on the size of the triangle and the size of the sphere.

In the same way as a line acts on the surface of a sphere, the velocities of objects bend in response to the warping of spacetime. With certain velocities and certain amounts of curving this line turns into a circle, and the object will orbit the source of gravity. This even holds true for light, but a huge amount of gravity is required. [2]

As we learned on the post about special relativity, time and space are linked. Because gravity warps spacetime, light takes longer to get between any two points. That means time must be slower. We experimentally confirm this every day, through the use of GPS. GPS satellites are far away from Earth and moving very fast. The lesser gravity increases the satellite’s speed through time, while the velocity decreases it. Depending on the satellite this could cause a difference of about 38 microseconds a day in timekeeping. Since timekeeping is essential in how GPS works, without knowing this GPS would not be accurate. [3]

Space and time are hard topics to understand, I hope you all made it through that.

nice self-vote. You might want to write articles and get steem power first, so it actually does something lmao

You are so cool! Isn't this guy cool?

Nice article, more of non-science people would understand it if it was more simpler..but it is not easy to make article as simple like this in Relativity.... amazing thing that gravity can bend the light too..and gravity affecting spacetime.

more simple? I don't think I can easily do that

I know that feeling

Good post on a very difficult part of modern science.

at this point everything is difficult in modern science lol

Good article. Have you ever read the book "On the shoulders of giants" by Stephen Hawking? There is an excellent section on Einstein in there.

no, but I have been meaning to read it

Once gravity is added, special relativity becomes general relativity

This reads like a recipe.

On a flat piece of paper all the angles of a triangle equal 180 degrees. That holds true everywhere, right? Well no actually, that only applies to flat space.

"Then no need to read any further, since the rest won't apply to me", thinks the flat-earther and merrily moves on to the next article.
