Jaws of life School project - Hydraulics

in #school6 years ago

Every parent knows what it is like, having a child come home with a project requirement that not only keeps you busy for hours, but also gets the parents to learn as much as the child does.

My 12 year old daughter was asked to make and show the workings of the Jaws of life used in rescuing people form wrecked cars that don't allow them to escape due to the steel being stuck or damaged.
Check out below what we had to model this after:

So this is what we got to once we had failed on our first attempt....and she did quite well in her marks.

And a video

What you think? We're quite proud of it :)

Wow, this is a very interesting project, do you deal with it?
It's a very interesting experience to do with the kids!
Well done, kids today are stuck in the phones and it's time they made things a bit more complex ...

Now that is the truth! It's a struggle to keep my kids off the phones and xbox, so when you have these opportunities, I try to give it a good go. She had a good time building it too, and felt a good sense of pride at the end result.
Now because of this she has taken to building other stuff with wood too.

Thanks for comment

Wonderful idea! Once kids get to know practical things like hydraulics while still young then their interest in STEM subjects will rise.

That's the hope for this parent. I would love the kids to actually learn an actual skill. Something like engineering is wonderful regardless where you are in life....and no matter what the world around them is doing. BUT I've learned with my older kids, that this is not my choice but theirs, and all I can do is encourage and hope.

Nicely Done!

Thanks Al, it was fun to do and Seryn loved the end result. I think it is because its something to play with
