SCHOOL WAHALA: IS EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE A SINFUL ACT?

in #school8 years ago (edited)

Greetings to you today, I believe you're in top high of your day? Enjoy the rest of it with great tranquillity and sound mind. Cheers! :)

So today, I felt like I should write to students at all levels, about a pressing issue that is deeply eroding the need to be studious and serious with self-determined efforts to excel in school.

Having recorded a couple of failures in examination, quite a numbernof students resort to malpractice; a cheap solution to get away with the failed record on their score cards. Some go the extra-mile of sorting in kind and or cash.

I hope that you get some value today and share with me your thoughts in the comment section, as we deliberate on this topic together.

Is Examination Malpractice a Sinful Act?

The school is a complex system with strict rules and regulations that requires absolute compliance by all students.

Whether you like it or not, every regulation guiding the affairs of the school to which you're a student is binding on you and it's expected that you absolutely obey them.

Permit me to ask you another question, and I'd really appreciate you being objective in your response.

IS EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE A SIN?

Your response can only be either a YES or NO based on reasons best known to you.

MY EXPERIENCE

A colleague at school once told me that examination malpractice is not a sinful act because it is not expressly stated in the Holy Bible as sin and that he in fact believes the Bible's silence automatically makes it open to people's discretion.

I thought of a suitable answer for a moment but could not find any because he actually was right; it is not explicitly written in the Holy Bible as wrong or right.

Then, I had a second thought and asked him "Sorry, but why is it done secretly?
I mean, why do they that practice it, conceal it?"
"Can you boldly call the attention of the invigilator and ask him to help you collect a cheat note from a colleague during an exam? Or can you simply ask for permission to do it yourself?"

I'm sure you know what his response would be, "A big NO of course!"

When I asked why not? He replied in Nigerian pidgin, "Ah! Nooo, e no make sense na! But Bible nur follow o!" In other words, "No, its against examinations ethics, but not the Bible's," he quickly added.

With that said, I knew I was already closing up the argument as I just got the head start. Therefore, I asked him again, "Do you then agree with me that they know it is wrong but still do it?" He said yes, but they do it secretly.

With his "right" answers, I drew him to the scriptures so we could both explore.

The book of James 4:17 says, "So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." (ESV)

Moreover, about doing it secretly, Paul the apostle in Ephesians 5:11 had already warned us saying, "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." (NIV). The scripture also added in verse 12 that "It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret." (NIV).

The truth revealed in the above scriptures automatically makes my colleague wrong - examination malpractice or what ever it may be called, is a sinful act because:

  1. It is against the examination rules or ethics and
  2. It is done secretly or in secret.

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE: REMEDY FOR FAILURE?

nyontek-1.gif

Often, students when caught in the act tend to deny, some chew up all evidences, while others run out of the hall with their scripts (especially during external exams) so as to avoid the weight of embarrassment and shame that follows immediately.

Stop being deceived, examination malpractice is never the alternative for failing a course.

There's more dignity in failing genuinely; doing your best and acting according to the rules and still failing, than in excelling fraudulently - through examination misconduct.

It gives everyone a false impression of you, holding you up in high esteem but according more disgrace and despise from the same people when you are apprehended eventually.

"It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation." - Herman Melville

WHAT IS A MALPRACTICE

The dictionary defines malpractice simply as "Any act contrary to any existing general code of conduct of a group or organization."

Which means its malpractice to deviate from the already existing code of conduct or instructions guiding an examination setting, whatever it may be.

MAKING IT CLEARER: THE EXCEPTION

For instance, if an examiner gives anopentest or exam (you have written one before, maybe) he cannot reprimand a student for flipping through the pages of his notes and textbooks in search for suitable answers. In this case, you are not scared to seek answers externally and you are not doing it secretly because it had been made official. One cannot refer to this as a malpractice because you are being covered by the express permission of the examiner, provided you are within the confines of his/her restrictions such as, no internet access or no use of textbooks.

I am dwelling on this subject of examination morality because the rate of its abuse is indeed very high, even among the so-called religious students.

Please do not be deceived by anyone, examination malpractice is a sinful act; the truth above said it all.
