PSA: Phishing via TextsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #scam5 years ago (edited)

Over the past few days, I have received a couple text messages claiming to be from Wells Fargo bank. This scam is someone trying to spoof the Wells Fargo site. If you enter your banking information on their fake site, they can access your real account to steal your money and personal information. This scheme is known as phishing.

This link should be an obvious fake. It isn't even a standard link shortening service, much less a Wells Fargo website.

This looks slightly more legit, but it is also 100% fake. Wells Fargo covers this scam on their site here with suggested actions you should take.

Be careful out there, folks. Perhaps you actually bank with those charlatans, so it might be a change of pace to be scammed by someone else for once, but I don't think it's a change for the better.

Update:
I did follow the instructions to forward a copy of the fraudulent text messages to [email protected], and gmail refused to deliver the messages because they had suspicious links. No shit. That is why I e-mailed the phishing report account. Be prepared to redact the actual link if you report such scams to Wells Fargo or any other bank. They may actually have a human read the message at some point, so consider adding a note to the effect of, "please contact me if you would like the web address that was sent in this message."

No bank will ever contact you via text or e-mail like this to verify your account. Neither will Paypal or cryptocurrency exchanges. People even try to do this with Steemit credentials sometimes. Never enter any login information unless you verify the address in your browser for the https version of the site you are trying to access.

I don't usually ask for resteems, but this warning obviously needs to be spread far and wide because people fall for it often enough to make it worthwhile for scammers to keep doing it. If you think this is at all important, please share.

Sort:

We get similar attempts in NZ as well, often from banks that you don't have an account at.

I don't use Wells Fargo, Bank of America, or any of the other big nationwide banks likely to be used in scams like this. Even so, you never know.

Have not seen that one but where I work they send out phishing emails from time to time as a test to see if anyone clicks on them. The lastest one was about a speeding ticket, and if you didn't respond the fine would increase. First off how would they have gotten my work email address? Gesh, it is amazing how many people fall for it!
