In my opinion, Jesus said this to refer to himself as the only option we have, for my heavenly Father determined that He would sacrifice him to give us salvation and eternal life; that is, if salvation could be attained otherwise then its sacrifice was in vain.
I also understand that it is an allegory of the decisions I must make on a daily basis; I often find myself at a crossroads or I have a disjunction, that is when I have to ask myself do I really follow Jesus,, the enemy will always put an alternate path "easier" or "more splendid" but that in the end leads to doom and death.
So today I will be alert and will always choose the right path that leads to you Holy Father.
