THE HEART OF THE CONGREGATION

Text: 1 Thessalonians 3: 6-13
What makes a church successful? A great attendance on Sunday morning? A multi-million dollar budget? An ultramodern place?
We all know that these are not the criteria that define a successful church. Whether your church hosts crowds that fill a stadium, or just have a few attendees, the figures are not the measure God uses for success. He looks at the heart of the church.

The apostle Paul established an important church in Thessalonica, the capital city of Macedonia. He showed his wish for the members of the church there when he wrote: "May the Lord make you grow and abound in love for one another, and for all ..., so that He may affirm your blameless hearts in holiness" (1). 3: 12-13). With these words, Paul showed us two characteristics that are vital for a body of successful believers - love for one another and holiness.

Congregations, church premises and budgets come in different sizes. The true measure of success is demonstrated by the followers of Christ who love God and who love one another and who are committed to living holy lives. Our challenge can be found in the words of the prophet Micah: "And what does the LORD demand of you, but only to practice righteousness, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?" (6: 8).

Reflection: A small church with a large vision has a greater impact than a large church with a small vision.
