A STUDY REVEALS HOW MUCH DO SANDWICHES POLLUTE

in #sandwich7 years ago

The sandwich is one of the favorite menus for most people who have to eat at work. They are easy to prepare and carry, can be made with the ingredients you want, and are comfortable to eat while the computer is being operated. It is also a type of food that is considered healthier than the rest of the so-called fast food. But are they harmful to the environment?

A team of researchers at the University of Manchester has calculated the carbon footprint of 40 types of sandwiches, taking into account the entire process that begins with the production of each ingredient, packaging, storage in refrigerators... And the truth is that the result is quite bleak.

According to this study, the least ecological of all would be one that Anglo-Saxons call All Day Breakfast, which contains among other ingredients, tomato, cheese, egg, bacon and pork. The entire production process of one of these sandwiches would emit about 1141 grams of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of a 19-kilometre-long car.

And the second most polluting would be the traditional ham and cheese sandwich, which would produce a total emission of about 1350 grams of carbon dioxide. Although it should be specified that this data refers to products that are purchased already prepared. And that emissions figures are cut in half or more if they are made at home.

In case you are interested, here is a selection of some other types of sandwiches. Always, according to the data from the Manchester studio.

Shrimp and mayonnaise. 1255.
Egg and bacon. 1182.
Ham alone. 1119.
Cheese and tomato. 1067.
Chicken and bacon. 1030.
