The US should get rid of the sanctions on Venezuela even setting aside Russia.

They have failed to get rid of Maduro and there is no sign they will do so any time soon.
At this point they're causing a lot of harm to ordinary Venezuelans in exchange for nothing in particular.

I don't think sanctions succeed this way. Their record is generally poor and arguably we should use them far less or give up altogether given the collateral damage involved.

One way they actually could help is toppling a regime that's already teeting on the brink by denying it the financing it needs to steady itself in the short run, or prompting the public to protest in larger numbers. I don't think credit markets are perfect for such regimes nor do people decide to take to the streets based on fully rational expectations about the likely length of sanctions.

The Venezuelan and Russian sanctions are very different. The whole point of the former is to help Venezuelans by changing the government. The point of the latter is to protect other countries from Russia, not help Russians themselves.
