MY EXPERIENCE AS A SAFETY PROFESSIONALS

I am Prince, a time lined safety professional with about fifteen years cognate experience in the Oil and Gas industry.
I have worked on shore and offshore. In some years back, I was employed by an Engineering company called West Engineering and we have a project with one of the Multi – national company called Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Soku Gas Plant in the Oil Producing Area of River State.

In the course of this project, a young man “Osita” was employed as laborer. We were given accommodation at the swamp Location a little distance away from the Gas plant.

The company sent the young Osite for a medical checkup and he passed the medical examination and was satisfied medically fit for the job. He also went for a swimming test; which was one at the pre – requisite for the job and he passed the swimming test.

The young Osita having met all the requirement for the project was conveyed to the project site through a pre-mobbed boat with other team members.

Osita reaching the project site was hardworking and was keeping all the Health Safety and Environment (HSE) rules on site.

Osita came from a poor home and he loved food. Seeing different kinds of foods that was served there and the money he was making refused to go for his Bi – weekly time off and he spent one month in the Gas plant without a time off and he suffered a mental defect called “Psychosis”, at a time he became violent.

He was taken to the medical team on site and they could not manage his situation. We contacted our client Head office in the town and they said he should be evacuated from the site immediately to our retainer ship clinic in the city.
Evacuating Osita through boat to Port Harcourt will take longer time and the HSE team of experts decided to fly him with a “chopper”.

He was injected in the clinic and he was not calm; it took the soldiers on site some time to tie his hand and his feet with marine rope since there was no hand cuffing gadget on site.

As a safety officer, I joined the chopper and every other person withdrew their traveling with that particular “chopper”. I was praying inside me filled with fear until we landed in the Shell I.A and l took him to the clinic and from clinic to the Psychiatric Hospital. That was my worst experience in my profession.
