Is Bitcoin safe?
Bitcoin technology - protocol and encryption - has a strong security record and the Bitcoin network is probably the largest distributed computing project in the world. Bitcoin's most common vulnerability is user error. Bitcoin wallet files that hold the required private keys can be erased, stolen or lost. This is very similar to traditional money kept in digital format. Fortunately, users can use good security practices to protect their money or use service providers that offer good levels of loss and theft insurance.

Has Bitcoin ever been "hacked" in the past?
The protocol and encryption rules used by Bitcoin are still working years after their creation, which is a good indication that the concept is well designed. However, security breaches have been found and fixed over time in various software implementations. Like any other form of software, Bitcoin software security depends on how quickly problems are found and fixed. The more these failures are discovered, the more Bitcoin software gains in maturity.
