Living the American dream part 2

What does it take to get started pulling RVs? Well that depends upon your goals. If you're just wanting to make a little extra money that's one thing, if you're wanting to make a living that something completely different. Once you have made this determination, you need to find a company that is a good fit for you depending on what they offer. For instance , there are several companies that you can work for, and although their requirements are similar, there may be slight differences in each company, i.e. some companies will allow a half ton pick up while others will not. For the purpose of this blog I will deal with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks to start with. An RV transporter is a commercial driver, and as such , is subject to all commercial driving rules. All commercial vehicles are required to have emergency triangles and a fire extinguisher on board. You will also be required to keep up with a logbook. You will need to get your truck licensed for 26000 pounds. You also need a DOT inspection on the truck. Before properly setting up your truck, you will need to determine if you are interested in pulling fifth wheel campers or just travel trailers(bumper pull). For bumper pull trailer's you will need a weight distribution hitch, and full width mudflaps. For a fifth wheel set up, you need at least a 16,000 pound fifth wheel. If your truck is a short bed the fifth wheel will have to be on a slider rail. You will also need a breakaway battery, torque wrench, 3/4 inch deep well, 13/16 deep well, 11/16 deep well socket. You will have to pass A DOT physical as well. Some items that are not required but are useful are an auxiliary fuel tank, CB radio, and an air ride suspension system. Once your truck is set up, you're ready to lease on to a company.
As the series continues, we will be addressing things you see on the road while driving.
And that's life through my windshield.
