World War III: The Russian and Ukrainian Conflict of 2022
The world has been in a state of constant crisis since the end of World War II. In the early twentieth century, Russia and Ukraine were two countries that were not on friendly terms with one another. After Vladimir Putin became president of Russia and Petro Poroshenko became president of Ukraine in 2012, the relationship between their two countries started to improve. Their relations worsened when an armed conflict broke out in Ukraine in late 2020.
There’s an ongoing conflict that’s been taking place in Ukraine for years. But what is it? And why does it matter?
The conflict began when Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a trade agreement with European Union in November of 2013. This was seen as a betrayal by Russia and their president, Vladimir Putin. They then annexed Crimea (part of the Ukraine) and have since been supporting the rebels in the East.
